Agentic Commerce Statistics 2026: AI Shopping Data
Agentic commerce statistics for 2026: AI referral traffic, conversion, Shopify AI orders, holiday forecasts and shopper trust, each with source, date and scope.
By Craftshift Team · · 8 min read
AI is still a small slice of ecommerce traffic in 2026, about 0.4% of retail site visits, but it is the fastest-growing one and it converts well. Adobe expects AI-referred traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% this holiday season, Shopify reported AI-driven orders to its merchants up nearly 13x year over year in Q1 2026, and AI and agents influenced 20% of global holiday 2025 online sales according to Salesforce.
Below are the 2026 numbers that matter, each with who measured it, when, and what it does not measure. Last checked: October 21, 2026.

How much ecommerce traffic comes from AI in 2026?
Very little in absolute terms: generative AI referrals make up about 0.4% of all retail ecommerce visits, even after growing 203% year over year, according to Similarweb’s State of Ecommerce 2026. Adobe repeatedly describes the base of AI shoppers as “modest”. The story in 2026 is growth and quality, not volume.
How fast is AI referral traffic growing?
Fast, but the growth rate is slowing as the base gets bigger. Adobe’s figures for AI-referred traffic to US retail sites:
| Period | Growth vs a year earlier | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday 2024 (Nov to Dec) | +1,300% | Adobe |
| Holiday 2025 (Nov to Dec) | +693% | Adobe |
| Q1 2026 | +393% | Adobe via TechCrunch |
| May 2026 | +138% | Adobe via Digital Commerce 360 |
| July 2026 | +62% | Adobe via Digital Commerce 360 |
| Holiday 2026 (forecast) | +130% | Adobe |
Does AI traffic convert better than search?
In 2026, yes, according to Adobe, but it did not a year earlier, so always quote the period. AI-referred visits converted 9% worse than other traffic in February 2025 and 23% worse during Prime Day 2025. By March 2026 they converted 42% better, 54% better in May, 40% better during Prime Day 2026 and 60% better in July, the 11th month in a row above non-AI traffic (Adobe Prime Day 2026, Digital Commerce 360).
Other signals point the same way. In holiday 2025, Salesforce found shoppers arriving from AI search converted nine times more often than those referred from social media (Salesforce). Microsoft reports that shopping sessions including Copilot led to 53% more purchases within 30 minutes (Microsoft’s own data) (Microsoft Advertising).
How many AI orders do Shopify stores get?
Shopify does not publish a share, but its executives give growth multiples on earnings calls, and the baselines differ:
| Quarter | Figure | Baseline |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 2025 | AI traffic 7x, AI orders 11x | Since January 2025 (PYMNTS) |
| Q4 2025 | AI orders 15x, “albeit from a small base” | Since January 2025 (Digital Commerce 360) |
| Q1 2026 | AI traffic 8x, AI orders nearly 13x | Year over year (PYMNTS) |
| Q2 2026 | AI traffic and orders about 3x | Year over year (PYMNTS) |
Merchant examples from Shopify in October 2026: Stanley 1913 saw 5x the AI-referred US orders of the same window a year earlier, ILIA’s AI-referred sales nearly tripled, and Cottonique’s grew 276% (Shopify).
How many people use AI assistants, and for shopping?
The audience is already large. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (TechCrunch). Google AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users and the Gemini app 950 million, per Alphabet’s Q2 2026 results (Alphabet).
For shopping specifically:
- 50% of shoppers use an AI assistant at some point before they buy, up 67% year over year, and reliance on AI as the first stop grew 200% from May 2025 to May 2026 (Salesforce).
- 47% of US shoppers use AI tools for at least one shopping task (Visa).
- 30% to 45% of US consumers use generative AI for product research and comparison (Bain).
- Among shoppers who have used AI to shop, 77% feel more confident in their purchase and 69% are less likely to return it (Adobe).
How many shoppers trust AI to buy for them?
Far fewer than use it for help. About one-third of shoppers say they have trusted an AI agent to buy on their behalf (Shopify), and at most 11% of US consumers would let AI make the purchase decision, even for household supplies (Gartner). Meanwhile 74% say they trust product recommendations from AI chat (Salesforce). The surveys ask different questions, but the pattern holds: shoppers let AI recommend before they let it buy.
What are the holiday 2026 AI shopping forecasts?
Adobe forecasts US online holiday sales of $275.1 billion (+6.7%) from November 1 to December 31, 2026, with AI-referred traffic up 130% (Adobe):
| Day | Forecast online sales | Growth | AI-referred traffic growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving, Nov 26 | $6.9B | +8.5% | +159% |
| Black Friday, Nov 27 | $12.9B | +9.2% | +95% |
| Cyber Monday, Nov 30 | $15.1B | +6.2% | +88% |
| Cyber Week | $47.5B | +7.4% | |
| Full season | $275.1B | +6.7% | +130% |
Salesforce predicts that 20% of all holiday 2026 ecommerce traffic will come from AI chat agents (a definition that includes agent bots), and that 1 in 3 ecommerce sites will have a site-specific shopping agent live by Cyber Week (Salesforce). Our BFCM AI visibility checklist turns these numbers into a week-by-week plan.
How big will agentic commerce be by 2030?
Forecasts span an order of magnitude because they measure different things:
| Forecaster | Figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey (Oct 2025) | Up to $1T US, $3T to $5T global by 2030 | Revenue agents could “orchestrate”, goods only |
| Bain (Dec 2025) | $300B to $500B, 15% to 25% of US ecommerce by 2030 | US agentic commerce market |
| Morgan Stanley via Digital Commerce 360 (Dec 2025) | Up to $385B, 10% to 20% of US ecommerce by 2030 | Spending by agentic shoppers |
| eMarketer | Over $20B in 2026, $144B by 2029 | US retail sales through AI platforms |
For B2B, Gartner predicts that by 2028, 90% of B2B buying will be intermediated by AI agents, moving over $15 trillion of spend (Gartner).
Why do agentic commerce statistics disagree?
Because they measure different things with different methods:
| Type | Example | What it can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Analytics panels | Adobe, Similarweb | Real visits and conversions across many sites, but only traffic with a recognizable AI referrer |
| Company statements | Shopify earnings calls, Microsoft | Real orders on one platform, but multiples without a base and with changing baselines |
| Influence estimates | Salesforce “AI and agents influenced 20%” | Counts any AI touch, from recommendations to service bots, not purchases made by agents |
| Surveys | Shopify, Gartner, Visa, Bain | What people say they do or would do, which runs ahead of behavior |
| Forecasts | McKinsey, Bain, Morgan Stanley, eMarketer | Scenarios with different scopes; not comparable to each other |
One more blind spot: AI assistants often open a store without a referrer, so their visits and orders can land under Direct. Every traffic-based figure above likely undercounts AI.
What does the data mean for a single Shopify store?
Market averages do not tell you how assistants treat your products. Your own agentic sales do: open Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify, or Octolift’s Agentic sales page, to see orders and visits per assistant and per product. Then check whether ChatGPT and Gemini recommend you for the questions your shoppers ask, which is what Octolift’s AI rankings measures. New to the terms? Read what agentic commerce is.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of ecommerce comes from AI in 2026?
