Agentic commerce is shopping that an AI assistant does on a person’s behalf: it finds, compares and often buys a product within limits the shopper sets. Agentic sales are the merchant’s side of it: the orders an AI assistant either placed for a shopper or referred to your store. In 2026 both are small but growing fast. Shopify reported AI-driven orders to its merchants up nearly 13x year over year in Q1 2026, while AI still sends well under 1% of retail site visits.
This guide explains how it works, which assistants can sell today, what the numbers say, and how a Shopify store measures its own agentic sales.
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is ecommerce where an AI agent does the shopping steps a person used to do: searching, comparing, choosing and sometimes paying. The shopper states a goal (“a waterproof hiking jacket under $200 that ships before Friday”) and the assistant does the legwork, then either sends the shopper to buy or completes the checkout itself.
The word “agentic” means the software acts, not just answers. A chatbot that describes jackets is conversational. An assistant that reads live product catalogs, checks stock and price, and opens a checkout is agentic.
What are agentic sales?
Agentic sales are the orders an AI assistant placed for a shopper or referred to your store, as your commerce platform attributes them. On Shopify, these are orders credited to an AI channel such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Shop.
Agentic commerce is the market; agentic sales are your share of it, in your own reports. The distinction matters because the market numbers in the news (traffic growth, forecasts) tell you nothing about whether assistants recommend your products. Your agentic sales do. Octolift’s Agentic sales page reports exactly this for a Shopify store, by assistant and by product.
How does an AI agent buy a product, step by step?
An agent purchase usually runs in five steps, and the merchant’s data decides most of them.
| Step | What the assistant does | What it reads from you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Understand the request | Turns the shopper’s words into needs (use, budget, size, delivery date) | Nothing yet |
| 2. Discover | Searches product catalogs and the web for candidates | Your product feed (on Shopify, the Shopify Catalog), your pages |
| 3. Compare | Ranks candidates on fit, price, reviews and availability | Titles, descriptions, category fields, variants, reviews, stock |
| 4. Buy | Sends the shopper to your checkout, or completes checkout in the chat | Price, shipping, policies, checkout |
| 5. After the sale | Answers “where is my order”, “can I return it” | Your store policies and store answers |
Steps 2 and 3 are where most stores lose. A product that is missing from the catalog never enters the shortlist, and a vague listing loses the comparison to one that spells out materials, sizes and use.
How is agentic commerce different from ecommerce and conversational commerce?
The difference is who does each step.
| Step | Classic ecommerce | Conversational commerce | Agentic commerce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover | Shopper searches | Shopper asks a chatbot | Assistant searches for the shopper |
| Compare | Shopper opens tabs | Chatbot answers questions | Assistant ranks options |
| Build the cart | Shopper | Shopper | Assistant, or shopper on a pre-filled cart |
| Pay | Shopper on your checkout | Shopper on your checkout | Your checkout, or checkout inside the assistant |
| After the sale | Your emails and pages | Your support chat | Assistant reads your policies and answers |
Which AI assistants can shop for people in 2026?
As of October 2026, Shopify lists these AI channels for its merchants through Agentic Storefronts, which is on by default for eligible stores (Shopify Help Center):
| Assistant | How shoppers buy | Who can buy |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Discovery in ChatGPT, checkout on the merchant’s own Shopify checkout | US shoppers |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout inside Google, powered by Shopify | US shoppers, US-based stores |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout inside Copilot (Copilot Checkout) | US shoppers |
| Meta (for example Muse) | Direct checkout, or the merchant’s checkout in Meta’s browser | US, Canada and Mexico |
| Shop | Shopify’s own shopping app | Shop users |
ChatGPT had a native in-chat checkout (“Instant Checkout”) from September 2025, and OpenAI moved away from it in March 2026: purchases are now completed on merchant-owned websites or apps (OpenAI). Perplexity was named when Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts in December 2025 but is not on Shopify’s current channel list.
What protocols make agentic commerce work?
Three open standards let assistants talk to stores without a custom integration for each one.
- UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol): announced by Google on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It powers checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Shopify says its merchants are “UCP-enabled by default” (Google, Shopify Spring ‘26 Edition).
- ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol): co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe, launched with Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025. Today OpenAI uses it for product discovery (Stripe).
- MCP (Model Context Protocol): a general way for an AI model to call tools. Shopify exposes its catalog to agents through UCP-based MCP endpoints.
On the payment side, Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce (both April 2025) give agents a way to pay with tokenized cards (Digital Commerce 360).
For a Shopify merchant, none of this needs code: the protocols run underneath Agentic Storefronts.
Is agentic commerce actually happening yet?
Yes, but from a small base. The growth is real; the share is still modest.
- Shopify: AI-driven traffic up 8x and orders from AI searches up nearly 13x year over year in Q1 2026 (PYMNTS), then about 3x in Q2 2026 (PYMNTS).
- Salesforce: AI and agents influenced $262 billion, or 20%, of holiday 2025 online sales, counting recommendations and service, not only agent purchases (Salesforce).
- Similarweb: gen AI referrals to retail sites grew 203% year over year, yet made up only 0.4% of retail visits (Similarweb).
More numbers, with sources and what each one measures, are in our agentic commerce statistics.
How big could agentic commerce get?
Forecasts vary widely because they measure different things. McKinsey estimates agentic commerce could orchestrate up to $1 trillion of US B2C retail revenue by 2030, and $3 trillion to $5 trillion globally (McKinsey). Bain puts the US agentic commerce market at $300 billion to $500 billion by 2030, 15% to 25% of US ecommerce (Bain). Treat these as ranges of opinion, not facts.
Do shoppers trust AI agents to buy for them?
Shoppers trust AI to help much more than to decide. Shopify’s 2026 Global Holiday Retail Report found that 65% of shoppers will use AI for at least one shopping task this season, while about one-third say they have trusted an AI agent to buy for them (Shopify). In a Gartner survey, at most 11% of US consumers would let AI make the purchase decision, even in low-stakes categories (Gartner).
For merchants this means the recommendation is the battleground today. Being the product the assistant names matters more than whether the assistant presses “buy”.
How do you measure agentic sales on Shopify?
Shopify credits orders to AI channels in its own analytics, and you can read them in three places:
- Shopify admin, Sales channels > Agentic: sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion per channel, last 30 days by default (Shopify Help Center).
- ShopifyQL reports: the
agentic_sales_channelandagentic_referring_channeldimensions, with values ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Shop. - Octolift’s Agentic sales page: the same Shopify data over 7, 30 or 90 days, by assistant and by product, with the orders behind each product (how it works).
Two caveats: assistants often open your store without a referrer, so some AI orders land under Direct and the real total is likely higher; and Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in checkouts completed inside an assistant.
What should a Shopify store do first?
Start with eligibility, then the data assistants compare, then measurement.
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and confirm your store is not marked Ineligible.
- Publish a refund policy, privacy policy and terms of service, the three policies Shopify requires for AI channels.
- Give every product a category, complete category fields, specific variant names and at least three images with alt text.
- Test the questions your shoppers ask in ChatGPT and Gemini and see who gets recommended (how to find those questions).
- Watch your agentic sales by assistant and by product.
Our step-by-step guide on how to sell on ChatGPT and AI assistants covers each step, and AI as a sales channel compares the channels side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Is agentic commerce the same as AI search?
No. AI search answers a question and may cite products. Agentic commerce goes further: the assistant acts on the shopper’s behalf, comparing live offers and moving them to checkout. AI search is often the first step of an agentic purchase.
Does agentic commerce replace SEO?
No, it adds a layer. Assistants still read the web and your pages, so classic SEO helps. But they also read structured product data from catalogs, so complete product fields, policies and reviews now matter as much as page rankings.
What is an example of agentic commerce?
A US shopper asks Microsoft Copilot for a gift under $50, Copilot suggests a product from a Shopify store, and the shopper buys it inside Copilot through Copilot Checkout. The order appears in the merchant’s Shopify admin credited to Microsoft Copilot.
Do I need to build anything to sell through AI agents?
Not on Shopify. Agentic Storefronts is on by default for eligible stores and uses the Shopify Catalog. Your work is eligibility, product data quality and measurement.
Summary
Agentic commerce is shopping done by AI assistants; agentic sales are the orders those assistants bring your store. It is growing fast from a small base, it runs on open protocols you do not have to touch, and the stores that win are the ones assistants can find and understand.
